About our Firm

We advise families, family offices, and fiduciaries in the design and stewardship of multigenerational structures.

Legacy By Design

Legacy by Design reflects more than a philosophy—it is a practical framework developed over decades of advising families, navigating complexity, and long-term responsibility.

At its core is a simple idea:

Wealth alone does not sustain a family—structure, purpose, and stewardship do.

The framework brings these elements together, helping families move beyond fragmented planning toward a more integrated, thoughtful approach—one that can endure across generations.

We help families build governance structures that foster a healthy relationship between wealth and responsibility, supporting continuity over time.

Areas of Focus

Drawing on experience in trust design, governance, and family advisory work, Legacy by Design introduces the concept of the Covenant Family—a family that intentionally aligns its resources, responsibilities, and relationships over time.

This approach emphasizes clarity in structure, discipline in decision-making, and continuity in purpose—so that wealth serves not just the present generation, but those that follow. Our work is grounded in practical application:

  • A clear framework for multigenerational planning

  • Practical guidance on structuring trusts and governance systems

  • A focus on stewardship, not entitlement

  • Designed for families seeking clarity, not complexity

“Well-designed structures do more than protect wealth—they prepare people.”

The Covenant Legacy Design Group is led by Dr. Daniel G. Worthington, J.D., LL.M., Ed.D., whose 35 year career has spanned service as a tax lawyer, academic leader, professor, executive board member, CEO, and national thought leader in trust and estate planning.

He previously served as associate dean at the University of South Dakota School of Law and, for over two decades, served on the board of managers of the South Dakota Trust Company—widely regarded as a national leader in modern trust administration.

He has consulted with families and multifamily offices for over thirty years. His numerous articles and work have been published nationally and on multigenerational trust issues, including contributions to leading publications on trust situs, governance, and long-term planning.

Our work is not about complexity—it is about clarity, continuity, and purpose.
